1. How did you hear about GIM?
I heard about GIM through one of my peers, Jenifer Boicic, from the Riordan Fellows Program.
2. Why did you choose to apply to GIM?
I love to travel and occasionally go on excursions that are education focused and allow you to visit some of the most beautiful places in the world. GIM not only provided that same experience in China but the program included the internship that allowed us to gain valuable international work experience. The fact that international experience is something that seems to be very highly valued amongst MBA programs is why I applied.
3. Please describe the high points of the trip for you.
I enjoyed how busy this program kept us. It was like you lived the life of 3 people out in China. During the day you were a hard working business man, in the evening you became an intellectual scholar listening to valuable key speakers that shared their experiences with you and offered valuable bits of advice and lastly you were given the opportunity to volunteer at a local school to help kids with their English.
4. What was a challenging aspect of the trip and how did you overcome?
The biggest challenge for me was adapting to the work styles of a different country. It's the little things that I never would have stopped to think about that challenged me most. [I am] accustomed to the way and speed the business world works in the US. It was a challenge to get accustomed to the styles in China.
The language -- although not as big of an issue as I would have thought -- also played a role in my comfort level. I tried to learn as much as I could but it would have been great to have known a little bit more.
5. How did GIM support your efforts as a positive global change agent?
GIM helped support my efforts as a global change agent by allowing me to go to a foreign country and help children with their english and interactions with foreigners. It was nice to participate in this activity and see how much the children appreciated it!!
6. Would you recommend GIM to other prospective graduate students?
I would recommend GIM to any one who wants to get real work experience working in a foreign country. This program allowed me to go to a foreign country, feel comfortable, work a real job, volunteer and help children, enjoy the night life and do all the tourist type things in 10 days. I can honestly look back and say that every penny spent on this trip was well worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
